The Walking Dead has always featured characters faced with impossible choices in an unforgiving world. With The Walking Dead Universe, you enter the world of the dead and face these choices. Your adventures could take place at any point in the series' timeline, encountering familiar or new faces and places, but the most difficult choice will always be the same: who are you going to be?

In the official role-playing game The Walking Dead Universe, you'll play the part of people struggling to survive in a hostile world. Exceptional hardships can arise from anywhere - from a lack of essential resources, conflicts within the group, flaws in the construction of your refuge or the approach of lurkers hungry for your flesh.

An official role-playing game powered by the Year Zero Engine

In the game, characters must not only improve their physical skills, but also explore in depth who they really are - what keeps them going, what they consider worth fighting for, and what they're capable of achieving, in the best and worst of times. Expect the stress and stakes to be high. The rules are based on the Year Zero Engine system, pushing the boundaries of the survival genre and allowing each group to tailor the game experience to their own interests and play style.

The Walking Dead Universe rules are based on the acclaimed Year Zero Engine, used for award-winning games such as ALIEN, Blade Runner, Tales from the Loop and Forbidden Lands. Modifications have been made to adapt it specifically to this game.

The game system is based on a central rule: you roll a number of six-sided dice determined by the values of one of your attributes and one of your skills. The higher the values, the more dice you roll. Each result of 6 gives you a success; several successes allow you to improve the outcome of your action. You can force a test, i.e. re-roll the dice at the risk of making the situation worse.

The rules are designed to blend invisibly into the story, letting you concentrate on the relationships between characters, while bringing the game's themes to the fore. We'll come back to some aspects of the rules below.
