Description
Freshwater Fly is the second standalone game in a series by designer Brian Suhre that incorporates modern game mechanics with the surprisingly rich and refreshing world of angling. In Freshwater Fly, you'll encounter a fish-infested mountain stream, armed only with a fishing rod, a reel and a selection of flies. To catch fish and earn valuable achievement points, you will need to carefully execute a series of tactical maneuvers while executing a deliberate and scalable strategy.
Start by examining the ever-changing hatch in the current, and attach a fly to match your target fish at the right time and at the right time and round the river. Then choose to throw upstream to drift your fly with the current and gain extra catches on your line, or push your luck with a millimeter throw for the perfect catch. In both cases, it's wise to throw near the rocks to improve your skills and discover new fishing techniques, while keeping your finesse reserve charged for the next challenge. Your reel, which rotates physically, gives you different bonuses when you pull the line, depending on the aggressiveness with which you choose to fight the fish you have caught. Applying the drag, for example, will undo the strength of the fish, but by leveraging your momentum, you could get a unique action to prepare perfectly for your next throw.
At the heart of this game, Freshwater Fly is a game of dice draft and set collection, with creative elements to solve puzzles and stop or. At each turn, you select a dice in the dice pool and assign it an action that relates to the particular fishing maneuver you want to perform. Higher value dice usually earn you more powerful actions, but accumulating a lower dice total can earn you free spins. The dice you select will also unlock or multiply various bonus actions that you can use to solve the most rigorous fishing puzzles in a unique and rewarding way.
The sets of fish and flies you collect will help you achieve personal and common goals, but to achieve victory, you need to focus on overlapping goals in the most valuable way, while not falling behind in your total fish count. The game ends when only one player catches a seventh fish, achievement points are awarded and the winner is declared.
