Description

Pax Pamir simulated the political situation and power struggles between tribal leaders in Afghanistan during the 19th century.

In Pax Pamir, players assume the role of 19th-century Afghan leaders trying to forge a new state after the fall of the Durrani Empire. Western historians often call this period "The Great Game" because of the role played by Europeans who tried to use Central Asia as the scene of their own rivalries. In this game, these empires are considered strictly from the point of view of Afghans who sought to manipulate the ferengi (foreigners) for their own purposes.

Pax Pamir is a pretty simple game. Players spend most of their time buying cards at a central market and then playing those cards in front of them in a single row called a yard. Playing cards add units to the game map and provide access to additional actions that can be performed to disrupt other players and influence the course of the game. This last point is worth noting. Although each builds its own row of cards, the game offers many ways for players to interfere with each other directly and indirectly.

To survive, players will organize themselves into coalitions. Throughout the game, the dominance of the different coalitions will be evaluated by players when a special card, called "Dominance Check", is resolved. If a coalition dominates the region in one of these controls, players loyal to that coalition will receive victory points based on their influence in their coalition. Otherwise, players will receive victory points instead based on their personal power.

After each domination check, the victory is verified and the game will be partially reset, offering players a new attempt to achieve their ambitions. The game ends when a player is getting a lead of four or more victory points or after the fourth and final domination control.
